           VISA INSTRUCTION GUIDE FOR INDIA

Effective immediately, all travelers must submit a photocopy of their birth certificate with their application. Copies of diplomas are no longer accepted.
 
 
TOURIST VISA - Please send the following:
  • U.S. Passport, signed and valid for at least 6 months.
  • One application form. You must complete, print and sign the ONLINE visa form.
  • Two passport size photos, color.
  • Copy of driver's license or state ID is required.
  • A photocopy of the birth certificate.
  • For US Citizens, the Embassy of India will no longer issue one year tourist visas.
  • A Tourist Visa is given to those visiting India for tourism or other non-business related purposes. 5 year and 10 year visas are available only to US citizens under a bilateral arrangement. 
  • Persons of Indian Origin, his/her spouse and dependent children will be granted only an Entry (X) visa and should not apply for a Tourist visa. Applicants volunteering, working with charities or working with non-profit organizations must apply for an Employment visa. 5 year and 10 year Tourist visas are available only to US citizens under a bilateral arrangement.
  • New Photo Requirement: Effective immediately, applicants are no longer allowed to wear glasses in their passport-style photos submitted with the Indian visa application. For applications to be submitted in San Francisco, photos must be paper-clipped to the application; applications with stapled photos will be rejected.
  • New Requirement for Travelers Under Age 18: Minors must now submit photocopies of both parents' state-issued ID (such as driver's license) or passport. 


    There should be a gap of at least 2 months between two visits to India on a Tourist Visa. For Tourist Visa holders who wish to visit India within 2 months of their last visit, a letter is needed to support two points 1) The letter must highlight the urgency of the visit and the purpose of the visit must be for recreation/sight seeing, casual visit to meet friends and relatives/others (to be specified). 2) They may not be engaged in Business Activities/Employment or pursuing studies/research, etc. In such cases, registration would be required within 14 days of arrival.

    All non-US passport holders are only eligible for up to a Six (6) month Tourist visa.

    Irrespective of the duration of validity of visa, on each visit maximum period of stay in India is limited to 6 months (180 days). Please note the visa is valid beginning on the day it is issued. So a 6 Month visa issued on January 1 would be valid until June 30.
           
BUSINESS VISA - Please send the following:
  • U.S. Passport, signed and valid for at least 6 months.
  • One application form. You must complete, print and sign the ONLINE visa form.
  • Two passport size photos, color.
  • Business cover letter from your company stating purpose of travel (letter must state the traveler will be going to India for "meetings and discussions only), dates of travel, name and contact of the company in India and financial guarantee for all your expenses. Please indicate if you are requesting one year, five year, and ten year visa. For five year and ten year visas must be accompanied by details of future planned trips.
  • Invitation letter is required. Include a letter from the sponsoring organization in India on company letterhead indicating the nature of applicant's business, probable duration of stay, the validity of visa applied for (1 Year, 5 Year or 10 Year), places and organizations to be visited, and a guarantee to meet maintenance expenses. 
  • Copy of driver's license or state ID is required.
  • A photocopy of the birth certificate. 
  • Note: If applications for five year or ten year visa are not granted, you must re-apply for a one year multiple entry visa.
  • A Business Visa is strictly given those who are doing business in India such as making sales or establishing contacts on behalf of a company outside of India. Business visas may be valid for one year or more with multiple entries. However, the period of stay in India (for each visit) under this category is limited to six months only. Business visas valid for ten years with multiple entries may be available to foreign businessmen who have set up or intend to set up joint ventures in India. Please note the visa is valid beginning on the day it is issued. So, a 1 year visa issued on January 1 would be valid until December 31. Applicants going for employment in projects/contracts in India should apply for an Employment visa and not a Business visa.  
EMPLOYMENT VISA - Please send the following:
  • U.S. Passport, signed and valid for at least 6 months.
  • One application form. You must complete, print and sign the ONLINE visa form.
  • Two passport size photos, color.
  • An employment appointment letter that contains the salary information. The salary must be a handsome amount.
  • An employment contract letter. The letter must be detailed and comprehensive.
  • The applicant's resume.
  • Proof that the organization is registered in India.
  • Copy of driver's license or state ID is required.
  • A photocopy of the birth certificate.
  • Employee Details Form: One copy of the Employee Details Form
  • Tax Liability Letter: A tax liability letter from the company in India which must certify the following details: 1) Indian company should be liable/take responsibility for paying taxes on behalf of the applicant. 2) Foreigners being hired will not exceed 1% of total workforce. 3) Within 1%, Foreigners should not exceed more than 20 employees. 4) In case the number of employees is within 1% but more than 20, applicants should understand that there may be a delay in decisions made on the issuance of the visa. 
  • An Employment Visa is granted to those who are an employee of an Indian company. The Embassy/Consulate may grant Employment visa valid for a year irrespective of the duration of the contract. Further extension up to 5 years could be obtained from MHA/FRRO in the concerned state in India. Please note the visa is valid beginning on the day it is issued. So a 6 Month visa issued on January 1 would be valid until June 30.
PERMIT TO RE-ENTER - Please send the following:
  • U.S. Passport, signed and valid for at least 6 months.
  • One application form. You must complete, print and sign the ONLINE visa form.
  • Copy of driver's license or state ID is required.
  • Reentry Permission Form. Those applying in Chicago should use this blank form instead.
  • A photocopy of the birth certificate.  
  • Processing Time: There is no guarantee that the will be granted. Only cases where the Ministry in India approves will be granted permission. The processing time is indefinite.
  • New Requirement for Travelers Under Age 18: Minors must now submit photocopies of both parents' state-issued ID (such as driver's license) or passport. 
  • This category only applies to current Tourist Visa holders who need a permit which will allow the applicant to re-enter India within 2 months after last leaving India. This permit is granted only if the need is urgent, and  not for Business Activities / Employment or pursuing studies / research, ect.
  • If permit is granted, registration with the FRRO is required within 14 days of arriving in India.
